The Chasnala mining disaster was a disaster that happened on 27 December 1975 in a coal mine in Chasnala near Dhanbad in the Indian state of Jharkhand. An explosion in the mine followed by flooding killed 380 miners. When a roof of coal caved in, 7 million imperial gallons (32,000 m 3) of water per minute flooded into the mine.

As per official statistics, 377 people have been killed in mining of coal, minerals and oil between 2015 and 2017; which translates to loss of one human life in every three days. Out of the all causalities, the coal mining sector contributes more than half the victims.

But this country would see its share of more tragedy down below. On Nov. 9, 1963, 458 miners were killed in the Mitsui Miike coal mine in Omuta, Japan, 438 of those from carbon monoxide poisoning. This mine, the largest coal mine in the country, didn''t cease operation until 1997.
